Magazine Assignment 3

The genre of my magazine is based around contemporary youth culture, such as music and cinema. It is aimed at 16-24 year olds primarily and is published as a printed magazine so that it is accessible to all. The purpose of it is to inform the audience on new film and music that they might not know about already. Allowing more niche media to reach a wider audience.

This was my first draft of my front cover

It follows most conventions of print magazines. Multiple cover lines with information about the articles inside, a price and barcode, a date/issue number, and a promotional sticker on the front. I didn’t use primary images at all in this draft which lead to me trying to integrate more primary content in the next version.

Final Cover

To improve from the last cover, I put my own photography in the background, a photo that I took on a bright day at the basketball courts at Barley Mow park in Summer 2018, which gives an even more intense vibe of summer with and adds more depth, detail, and sharpness to the cover.

Another addition I made was making the title invert colors halfway through. This makes it more vibrant and stands out better. The main cover line also changes color on the second line, which keeps with the theme of red/yellow text. There are now also multi colored lines between the cover lines. This breaks them up and adds more colorful style overall. I took off the promotion sticker from the front because in my opinion it made the cover too busy and crowded. Without it, the viewer can focus on the main title line and imagery more easily. This image also appeals to my young audience by portraying colorful contemporary youth lifestyle (basketball courts, summer days, clear skies)

This was my first draft for the double page spread

I used a similar color scheme as found on the cover, with a tropical-summer theme taken from a picture from Donald Glover’s because the internet album notes. The text represents the dual personalities of Donald and Gambino, and the image of the animated Donald Glover represents the more personal side that he explored in the song’s music video which the image was taken from. The article itself is again very conventional and I took inspiration from other hip hop based magazines such as the Fader. A dominant image takes up an entire page and some of the next page, the headline contains the artist name (or in this case, multiple aliases of the same artist), and there is an introductory sub title that introduces Donald and describes the course of his career, allowing my audience who have never heard of him before to be enticed by his story and encouraged to read the full article and learn about him. The text reads down the page like a regular article and wraps around the animated picture of Donald. I used a modern looking sans serif font all across this design, embolding it for the sub title. This was to make the article easy to read once it had been printed and also to use a contemporary looking text that would again appeal to my younger demographic.

Final Double Page Spread

I edited the double page spread to add more primary content and fix some of the formatting. I used a photo that I took and edited myself in Photoshop which has a futuristic and neon inspired vibe to it, giving the design more depth in terms of color. I then added a photo of Donald that I found from a recent photoshoot that fit onto the color scheme of my own photo. Another change I made in this version was justifying the article’s text to the left where the image ends, filling the page better and overall making the design look cleaner.
