Pre Production Evaluation

I believe that my pre production process was successful in facilitating the success of my film’s production. The logistics planning that I carried out helped me plan my cast and crew to arrange a time to meet up and shoot the film. This involved creating a group chat where we ensured that all of us would be free on days that we would have to film, and that there would be no issues with transport. We also stayed notified of any messages on the chat to ensure that we could quickly reschedule if anyone dropped out at short notice. The health and safety procedures carried out prior to the shooting also ensured that there was an incredibly small amount of risk for an accident to occur. This included being aware of where hospitals were present in the shooting locations of Sunderland and Newcastle, and having transport on site to access them. If a serious incident was to occur where medical attention was necessary, it would have slowed down the production or possibly caused rescheduling. We strictly followed our schedule throughout the entire production, however, there was one scene in particular that needed to be reshot. We filmed this on the next scheduled evening and ended up staying out a while longer than expected. This was not a problem because all of my cast and crew were flexible and patient and were willing to take the time to ensure that the scene was the best it could be. The schedule meant that we shot each scene efficiently, without having to travel excessively unnecessarily. The process for location scouting was easy as I am very knowledgeable about both areas. This meant that I easily correlated every scene to a local location from the very initial planning process and did not have to spend an unnecessary amount of time searching for places to shoot.

The idea for the film was brainstormed over the course of a few months. Before sitting down and completing the treatment for the film I began researching and watching similar films for stylistic and plot inspiration. I naturally worked my way through my film watchlist and took inspiration from a myriad of films from different genres and countries. Gaspar Noé and Michael Haneke specifically were filmmakers that I found particularly inspiring, and while I did not attempt imitate them closely in my own film, understanding their approach to filmmaking helped to personally motivate me.

The biggest constraint I faced through the production was the shortness of the film and how limiting this would be on what I could explore within the plot. Working under 5 minutes severely limited how much detail I could include about the characters and the context of the backstory. If I had a longer time limit, I would have fleshed out Kevin and Tyler and their history more, and would have included more background on Tommy and his motives through the narration.
